The rules are pretty simple. Person 1 creates a word and does not share it with anyone. On the piece of paper, they will out small lines for each letter of the word. Person 2 starts to guess letters that may be in that word.

If there are correct letters in the word, Person 1 will fill them in. In Spanish, the most common letters are E, A, O, S and N.

When I was in college, I picked up a study tool that I have used ever since. It got me through graduate school, a personal training certification, exams and more. Flash cards are a very simple tool to use. I wrote the key concept on the front, with bullet points on the back side.

Reviewing the flash cards over and over in my head and saying them out loud helped me learn faster. I also aced my exams.

The three best ways to use flash cards are for conjugating verbs, vocabulary words, or common phrases or questions. For vocabulary words, there are a couple of ways to do it. The first way is to have the English word on the front and the Spanish word on the back.

Another way is to have the definition in Spanish or English on one side and the Spanish word on the other. This way is a bit more challenging. The third way is to have common every day phrases on one side with the translation in Spanish on the other.

You can also ask yourself questions like What are the days of the week? on one side with the days of the week on the other. Flash cards can easily be purchased or downloaded as an app, but I always recommend to buy index cards and write them out by hand.

Even if your handwriting is poor, write them out by hand. Writing helps create the connection to the brain. Did you know that these methods can actually hinder performance?

And there is something about ink and paper that prompts students to go beyond merely hearing and recording new information. The study took two groups of students — one group with laptops and the other with traditional note books. Both groups listened to the same lecture, took notes and were tested on the concepts 30 minutes after the lecture.

The traditional note taking group did much better than the group with laptops. The game consists of all the players sitting in a circle.
